My makeup routine has not changed significantly over the years. Maybe ever five years or so I switch up my makeup color palettes or incorporate the newest makeup trend whether it be the newest eyebrow techniques, highlighting and contouring application or new lip trends. I occasionally will switch up my products when I want to try something new. Most commonly, I am enticed by makeup products I frequently come across on Instagram or on social media platforms.
So typically this is my daily routine no matter the occasion. I tend to keep it the same whether I am working or going out for the evening. The only time I typically break my normal routine is when I am in a hot and humid climate. I hate the feeling like I have anything on my face so for these moments I prefer just using a serum, eye cream and face moisturizer.
I begin my day by always cleansing my face with Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser $25USD and two to three times a week with Clarins Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser $29USD. I typically use the exfoliator when my skin starts to feels dry to remove any dead skin cells and to keep my skin feeling smoother and appearing softer.
Right after I step out of the shower, while my face is still dewey, I apply my Shiseido Bio-Performance Corrective Serum to keep my skin feeling hydrated throughout the day. I then apply Clarins Extra Firming Eye Complete Rejuvenating Cream and lastly Shiseido Benefiance NutriPerfect Day Cream. I like to let it set into my skin while I sip my morning latte and begin the extremely long daily process of drying my hair.
On the days I want to add a little color tint or highlight to my skin I mix in a dap of Benefit Cosmetics Dew the Hoola Soft Matte Liquid Bronzer to give me a sun kissed look or Benefit Cosmetics High Beam Liquid Face Highlighter to give myself a luminescent glow.
I have tried several foundations over the years and either they are too heavy and leave me with a heavy cakey feeling on my skin or they are too sheer with not enough coverage. About a year ago I Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water Broad Spectrum SPF 30 in light/neutral and I absolutely love it. It gives me the coverage I need without the feeling that something is on my skin. However, I rarely use it all over my face, I primarily use it just in the eye region.
I will then follow it up with a light sweep of MAC Select Sheer Pressed Powder in NC15 $27USD on my eyelids before I begin applying my eyeshadow.
My go-to eyeshadow is the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette $54USD. It has all the shades I need to complete the look I am going for any particular day and it is great for travel. I also frequently use Stila Eyeshadow in Coco $18USD paired with Stila Eyeshadow in Kitten $18USD if I going for a softer look still with a little shimmer. My absolute favourite eyeshadow currently is Stila Eye Shadow Trio – Gold Glow originally $28USD currently on sale for $12USD. It has an intense bronzer tint that creates a strong eye that I love wearing in the evening.
Once my eyeshadow is on I then apply concealer under the eyes to cover up all my imperfections especially my dark circles. To help neutralize the darkness under my eyes I recently started using Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer color R32 $27USD which has an orangey hue that works wonders. I then apply a light coat of MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC25 $22USD to help blend the Make Up For Ever Concealer more evenly. If I am going out for the evening I will use my MAC Matchmaster Concealer in shade 1.5 $22 because I find it has a weighty feel when I apply it. In any typical day I use Benefit Cosmetics Fake-Up Undereye Hydrating Concealer in color 02 medium $24USD because it has a lighter coverage and doesn’t leave me feeling like I have something on my face nor leave creases under the eyes. After my concealer is applied I add a light coat of Mac Select Sheer Pressed Powder to seal in everything.
My ABSOLUTE must have even if I am not wearing any other makeup is my MAC Ripe Peach Blush Ombre $32USD which is no longer available. I has a peachy hue with a hint of bronze to give my cheeks a sun kissed glow. I then apply a sweep of Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Matte Bronzer $29USD to give my cheeks more definition and help contour them for more definition. I then finish off my cheeks with a sweep of Becca Highlighter in Champagne Pop for $38USD. I also apply it down my nose, on my cupids bow and my chin to highlight those areas perfectly.
To complete my whole look I mostly use Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner in Nude Medium or in Rosebud $25USD for a neutral look for day and often for evenings. For evenings I tend to switch it up depending on my mood and outfit choice so there are too many too list. I line my lip just beyond my natural lip line to achieve a full lip and then proceed to color in the whole lip with the liner in order to have my lipstick last longer throughout the day.
After I pencil in my lips I use one of my four favourite nude/pinkish lipsticks or glosses: Clinique Pop Lip Color & Primer $18.50USD, Shiseido Lacquer Gloss Be102 Debut $25, Limecrime Velvetines The Original Liquid Matte Lipstick in Marshmallow (Light Pink) $20USD or Limecrime in Prairie $20USD. I tend to be drawn to these shades because they are understated and go with anything.
In the past few years I stopped wearing eyeliner daily. I love the look but I much rather prefer the softer look. I have been wearing eyelash extensions for about six years now and I feel like they create such a dramatic eye and understated makeup complements my lashes better. When I do wear eyeliner my absolute favorite is Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil in Matte Black because it stays all day or night without having to reapply it. Plus, I hate removing it nightly because no matter how much time I spend taking it off I always have see traces of it under my eyes in the morning.
I always ALWAYS make sure to remove my makeup before bed in order to prevent breakouts and it allows my face to breathe and feel hydrated and clean in the morning.
What are your favorite products? I would love to hear.
Until next time,
